Proves a ratings winner for eighth year on PBS

(New York February 13, 2003) Hit British sitcom As Time Goes By, produced by leading independent producer DLT Entertainment in association with its sister company The Theatre of Comedy, continues to be a major success in the US. For the eighth consecutive year it pulled in huge ratings when it aired in syndication on PBS and was the top rated British sitcom on PBS in the USA for 2002.

Starring Oscar/BAFTA-winning Dame Judi Dench and audience favourite Geoffrey Palmer as old flames Jean Pargetter and Lionel Hardcastle, As Time Goes By was in the top 10 of PBS programmes in primetime for 25 of 26 weeks in the second half of 2002. It reached 92.17% of all US households and is considered by PBS as one of their most successful shows with a loyal and consistent audience.

The fan base in the US has continued to grow throughout the run of the show. Dedicated internet clubs with loyal members have emerged and PBS has been inundated with fan letters. As a high point in 2002, a group of supporters travelled to London to witness the recording of the ninth series, which will air on PBS from March 2003. In addition to broadcast audiences, all the series of As Time Goes By have been incredibly well received through their video and DVD releases.

As Time Goes By, which also continues to be a major hit in the UK and internationally, is a gentle and enduring love story. Jean (Dench) and Lionel (Palmer) were set for a happy ending in the 1950s when Jean was a student nurse and Lionel was a young army officer. But, Lionel was posted abroad and they lost touch. Thirty-eight years later through a strange coincidence they are reunited and the flame of passion shows it can still flicker in middle age.

Don Taffner Chairman of DLT and TOC says: “We are delighted that As Time Goes By continues to be such a major success in the US - the consistently high ratings speak for themselves. The response from the public is fantastic and PBS tell us their audience keeps championing for more.”
