DLT Entertainment concludes international sales across diverse slate

Cannes, MIP-TV 2004: Leading independent production and distribution company DLT Entertainment has sold its hit sitcom My Family to the US. BBC America has picked up the award-winning programme which will make its US debut this spring.

BBC America has ordered all 49 episodes of the first four series of the popular show with the option to license further episodes in the future. The deal sees BBC America hold exclusive broadcast rights for My Family for the first year. From spring 2005, DLT Entertainment will simultaneously license the programme in the US through non-commercial syndication.

This deal caps a hugely successful year when DLT won accolades for My Family at the TV Quick Awards and the prestigious National Television Awards. In addition, the company cracked the competitive German market selling the format rights to the long-running programme to RTL and to Poland’s TVP.

Consisting of 13 episodes, the fifth series of the popular sitcom is currently airing on Fridays in primetime on BBC One in the UK reaching an audience of just under ten million with a 38.5% share.

Produced by DLT Entertainment UK in association with Rude Boy Productions for BBC One, My Family is created by Fred Barron, written by a team of writers and stars highly acclaimed actors Robert Lindsay and Zoë Wanamaker. The new episodes are written by an experienced team of writers, headed by James Hendrie and Ian Brown.

The series has developed a dedicated viewership both in the UK and internationally, with sales concluded in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Dubai, Eire, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Iceland, Israel, Kenya, Kuwait, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, South Africa and Sweden. DLT Entertainment has the worldwide format rights to the series and BBC Worldwide and DLT jointly handle finished programme sales.

My Family focuses on the life of Ben Harper, a moderately successful family man and dentist. He is also undergoing a mid-life crisis and trying to cope with the bizarre reality of raising his three, very different, teenage children.

Series one and two of the popular sitcom were released on DVD this week by VCI quickly proving a hit with fans and climbing to number 46 in the UK home entertainment charts after its first three days.

In addition, DLT Entertainment has recently concluded a number of international sales for its popular comedy, factual, drama and animated programming. All nine series of the ratings winning sitcom As Time Goes By have been snapped up by Orbit for broadcast in the Middle East.

South Africa’s SABC has picked up The Story of Mothers and Daughters and The Story of Fathers and Sons. The two one-hour specials examine the poignant and powerful relationship shared by mothers and daughters and fathers and sons around the world.

Neighbours, the popular Australian serial-drama which focuses on the residents of Ramsey Street, has sold to US cable network Oxygen. The hit is now in its 18th year of production and is broadcast in 57 countries around the world.

DLT Entertainment has also concluded video deals for its library of superb children’s programming, Animated Classics, with Mercury in France and Thailand’s St. Grand Corp.

Donald Taffner Jr, Vice President DLT Entertainment says: “Moving into the US market is an important step for My Family and we are delighted to have concluded this deal with BBC America. The show has proved popular with audiences around the world and we are confident it will continue its success in the US. Our eclectic slate of programming continues to have a broad appeal which is reflected by these recent deals.”
