DLT Entertainment Ltd. is internationally reconized as a leading independent company engaged in virtually every aspect of the marketing, production and distribution of video programming. With headquarters in New York and London DLT Entertainment has the resources and contacts to develop and execute program projects virtually anywhere in the world.
Family owned and run since 1963, it has built an impressive history of success — producing and distributing its own programs, and marketing programs produced by others in the U.S., and around the world.
Founder Donald Taffner started in the entertainment business at the William Morris Agency, which he joined as a messenger in 1952. By the time he left the well-known talent agency in 1959, he had been an agent there for four years. For the next four years he built his experience in television program distribution, helping to begin the Television Program Department at Paramount. He left to form his own enterprise in 1963.
The new company was a buyer of U.S. programming — for an Australian network and for stations in Canada. The company then shifted its emphasis, representing programs produced overseas and selling them in the U.S. — including the animated Beatles series for King Features Syndicate produced at Artransa Park in Australia, and King Features’ Krazy Kat, Barney Google and Beetle Bailey, also produced in Australia. The first major sale in the U.S. was an Australian series, Skippy, The Bush Kangaroo , which ran successfully for several years in The U.S.
In 1969, DLT was appointed the US distributor for Thames Television and was responsible for selling The World At War which provided Thames with the necessary fundung to produce the 26 episode series narrated by Sir Lawrence Olivier. In addition to countless programs such as Edward and Mrs. Simpson and Reilly, Ace of Spies sold to PBS, DLT was instrimental in intrducing The Benny Hill Show to America.
DLT Entertainment became a television programming producer in its own right in 1977. Using the characters and format of Thames’ hit comedy series Man About The House, the Taffner company premiered Three's Company® which quickly became one of the most successful situation comedies in U.S. network television history. Production and distribution of the company’s own programming has grown ever since. DLT Entertainment is widely known as one of the important independent producers and distributors around the world
Its significant UK production successes include nine series of As Time Goes By with Dame Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer and eleven series of the award-winning My Family with Robert Lindsey and Zoe Wannamaker. Its most recent TV productions were the video game television series Dara O’Briain’s Go 8 Bit for UKTV (Dave) and for CBBC Monster Court.
In 2018 DLT expanded its television production activities in The UK through the acquisition of Vera Productions whose past productions include Getting On, Million Pound Jewellers, Bremner, Bird, and Fortune, and numerous Dispatches such as President Trump’s Dirty Secrets, Politicians for Hire: Cashing in on Brexit, and £2 Million passport – Welcome to Britain.
DLT has a significant ownership with various talent agencies that focus primarily on the UK comedy scene these include The Galton Agency, Blue Book Artist Management, Hannah Layton Management. The Soho Agency and Milburn Browning Associates.
DLT launched an audio division in 2020 and has produced a number of programmes including for Audible, Very Modern Quests hosted by Alice Levine and Panic Room lead by John Robins.
DLT's ownership in London's largest indpendently owned theatre, The Shaftesbury Theatre, started in 1986 and today it is the sole owner. During that time the Shaftesbury Theatre has welcomed Tony Award and Olivier Award-winning productions to the West End like Hairspray, Memphis, Berry Gordy’s Motown, and & Juliet. Recent building works have updated the Theatre for the 21st century. An investment by DLT has reconfigured the auditorium, provided state of the art air conditioning and ventilation, a spectacular fly tower with significantly increased technical capability, larger hospitality and public spaces, new toilet facilities and radically improved accessibility.
Alongside the Shaftesbury Theatre the Company is also engaged in live entertainment through the comedy promoters, Impatient Productions and the agency/promotor Gag Reflex. Blue Book Artist Management is also active in live entertainment through The Boat Show, London’s finest floating comedy club, at the Tattershall Castle which is moored on the Thames at Victoria Embankment. Finally, it is an active investor in West End and Broadway productions, having supported over ten productions in recent years.
The companies represent a breadth of work across television, audio, live touring, stand-up comedy, theatre and publishing, developing synergy between these elements to create new opportunities for DLT, the agencies and their clients.
